Evaluating the effectiveness farmers coping strategies against drought. Disaster Prev. Manag. Know. 2015; 5 (2) :109-118

Background and objectives: Drought is threatening the economy and rural livelihoods. Time scales of several years of drought in the rural economy and agriculture have a negative impact and persistence of the changes are function and rural migration. Coping strategies of farmers in relation to drought are developed mainly to counteract the immediate negative impacts associated with the event. Here, the term coping strategies is used to represent any action of the farmer geared towards mitigating the impacts of a drought episode on their farming system. Method: This is followed up to assess ways of coping with drought in the village. The research is descriptive- analytical and data is collected through the questionnaire. Sulduz rural district in Azarbaijan Gharbi province was statistical society of present study. Ten villages were selected as samples, The villages has a higher risk of drought based on ranking methods. According to Cochran formula 300 questionnaires were filled randomly. Data were analyzed using statistical. Findings: The results of present study showed that Effectiveness of measures has been different to coping with drought in villages. So that in half of the villages studied the consequences of dehydration is reduced, but in some villages the drought has led to adverse consequences, and lead to irreparable economic, social and environmental effects in these villages. Conclusion: According to the data analysis and findings of this study, we can conclude that the same strategies will be different effects on agriculture economy because of natural, economic and social factors. So, in order to improve the effectiveness of any strategy, we have to consider the other factors. Article type: Research paper
