Background and objective: Tsunami is a rare phenomenon; however it might cause immeasurable damage. Tsunami is inevitable and couldn’t be prevented, but there are some tasks to reduce the risk and preparing to face it. The aim of this project is to review the architectural and urban planning measures and ideas toward this horrible hazard. The japan is chosen for the case study knowing that it is pioneer and has done lots of actions against the tsunami.

Method: This study reviews documents, literature and written texts and also the internet database in the field of vulnerability reduction and dealing with tsunamis. The procedure of the research starts with gathering a lot of information proceeding by concentrating on the architectural and urban planning strategies.

Findings: The results of this research are classified in three categories: The first category is the architectural solution, the second category is urban planning solution and the latter is proposed ideas.

Conclusion: In order to reduce the hazardous effects of tsunami, in one hand technical solutions should be applied, on the other hand disaster management, also planning to face secondary incidents is required. Appropriate strategies lead to risk reduction and increasing preparedness in societies against tsunami. In this research the main focus is on architectural and urban planning strategies.
